Before the war he was an accomplished baseball catcher and boxer. After the war he was an umpire in the minor leagues, once serving as the home plate umpire for the Kid's Glove game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Cleveland Indians, before taking a full time job at the William Powell
Company where he worked until his retirement. He taught umpiring for Knothole Baseball in Mt. Healthy and his wife, Marge, did the scheduling. They were both inducted into the Knothole Hall of Fame for their work.
